Kalari Marma Treatment

The word Marma used with meanings as tender, secrete or vital places. There are certain anatomical locations in the body which are vital, and serve as small pockets of Prana, thus any injury to these parts can be painful and cripple the local functions or even lead to sudden death of the individual. They are junctions of different channels of Prana movements in the body. Prana is a vital energy ,Prana pervades each and every corner of the body, it nourishes , guides and controls the functioning of the cell and systems. when these MARMA (junctions) are affected or ruptured ,the organs linked with Prana channels become starved with lack of Prana and some organ becomes diseased ,crippled or paralyzed or depending upon the quantum is of Prana being lost ,it may lead to slow or sudden death. Marma is the meeting point of Mamsa , Asthi, Sira , Snayu, Dhamani, Sandhi, and ‘where the Prana is present’. This is similar with Chinese meridian concept in which the points appear either on signal meridian line or at meeting points of different meridian. The knowledge of MARMA has got wide implication in the many fields of medical practice, but as today its traditional practices are limited and scattered in India. The knowledge of Marma can be classified in following fields -In Martial art and

welfare, in surgical importance, medical importance in the management of disease and in the diagnosis of illness. Generally, there are total 107 Marma in the body, but in kalari tradition there are 365 Marma points. They are classified for better understanding according to the physical components like – 1-Mamsa Marma (muscle), 2- Sira Marma- ( vessels conveying body fluids and impulses), 3- Snayu (tendons), 4- Asthi (bones) and 5- Sandhi (articulate points specially bone joints). The Marma are also grouped on the basis of the similarities in the features particularly on the basis of vulnerability, such as

A- Sadhya Pranhara Marma

Sadhya means sudden or immediate. There are the Marma which are vulnerable for the loss of life immediately after injury or insult.

B- Kalantara Pranhara

Kalantara means after the lapse of some time, Pranhara means loss of life. After an insults to these Marma loss of life results gradually after some time.

C- Vishalyaghana

This category of Marma is named on its surgical importance. Vishalya means being the foreign body removed. Vishalyaghana indicated death being the foreign body removed.

Marma knowledge along with the knowledge of Ayurveda, has the potential to treat all physical and mental diseases. There are total 108 marma points in the body in which 64 are considered as Kulamarma (deadly points which can be used to heel or to harm the body. The mind is considered as the 108th Marma. If the Marma points are pierced hard, it could result in trauma or even death. The other Marma points are classified for better understanding according to the physical components:

  • Mamsa Marma - muscle
  • Sira Marma - vessel
  • Snayu Marma- Ligament
  • Asthi Marma- bones
  • Sandhi Marma – joints

Kalari Chikitsa is usually done by Kalari Masters called ‘Gurukkals’ based on mainly Thirummal (Massage) of the whole body with various oils and drugs with healing power. A kalari master uses the Marma points to heal. The kalari master has extreme knowledge about psycho-physiological aspects and practical knowledge on the body's vital spots 'Marma'. This gives him extraordinary control over his body and thus the control of the vital energy.

The Kalarippayattu therapy is aimed at remodeling the humors of the body environment. Vata humor is considered to be the principle energy in the living body, which enables the other energy forces to work in its manner. Channelizing this particular energy system will naturally balances the other humors too.

Marma Chikitsa, so sophisticated, employs many medicinal oils and herbal preparations to treat a wide range of diseases through manipulation and massage techniques. This form of therapy gives flexibility, agility and good health.

Kalari Marma Chikitsa (Marma Healing) has become very popular and we offer all the healing therapies including rejuvenation therapy, relaxation exercise and massage using medicated oils.

Apart from the Ayurvedic treatment, kalari has a specialized method of treatment called “Marma chikitsa”, treating the damages on vital parts of the body. Out of the 107 vital spots of the body 64 of them are fatal if injured, and this system of treatment cures injuries to any such parts. The traditional orthopedic system of Kalari is widely popular, especially for the setting of displaced bones.

Kalari is famous for treatment of ortho, neuro and muscular diseases such as arthritis, spinal injuries, sports injuries, bone fractures, rheumatism etc. This follows the Ayurvedic Kalari system of Medicine which is mainly based on massage.

The Kalari uzhichil (A special Marma manipulation technique) and massage are done using medicated oils (Thailams) and pastes specially prepared by kalari masters after studying the nature of sickness and the physic of the patient. Muscular injuries, broken bones, back ache, joint pains, spondylitis, arthritis and rheumatic diseases are treated with precision in kalari treatment.
